Shea Stadium may be overshadowed in hype by Yankee Stadium, but is certainly a sight that baseball fans and tourists will want to experience while in New York City. Shea Stadium is home to New York City's "other" baseball team, the New York Mets. The Mets held their first game at Shea Stadium in 1964, and since then the stadium has never looked back. Although rival Yankee Stadium owns the distinction of being the first baseball field labeled as a "stadium", Shea Stadium was the first of its kind to host a rock concert when in 1965 the Beatles performed in front of 56,000 fans.
From legendary rock concerts to the sports excitement of the New York Mets and football legend Joe Namath, Shea Stadium has long been every bit as important as its city neighbor Yankee Stadium, even if it hasn't always gained the same recognition.
