New Haven Green and the Yale campus near New York, NY are two major attractions and public landmarks in New Haven, Connecticut. Located in the downtown section, New Haven Green is a park and recreation area consisting of 16 acres designed for the enjoyment of the public.
Shortly after New Haven was founded, they built the streets in a grid consisting of four streets by four streets, a design that's called the "Nine Square Plan". The central block of this square, which is a National Historic Landmark, is the Green also known as New Haven Green. Being located in the center of the square has allowed it to be surrounded by the busy streets of College, Church, Chapel and Elm. In addition to the daily park activities, the Green is also the site of the Festival of Arts and Ideas, classical music concerts and summer jazz concerts. Many of the townspeople just come to this park to socialize or play with their children.
The Green is divided into an upper and lower half, with buildings on both sections. The upper section of the Green is the site for three historic churches, North Church, Center Church and Trinity Church. The Bennett Fountain and the World War I Memorial Flagpole are located on the lower Green. Another section of the Green holds Yale University and Phelps Gate.
Yale University, founded as a Collegiate School, is a private university located in New Haven. In addition to being part of the Ivy League, Yale is also the third oldest school in the U.S. The Yale campus is huge with many landmark buildings such as Sterling Hall of Medicine, Harkness Tower, and Sterling Memorial Library to name a few.
