The Grand Concourse, also known as the Deco Mecca, is the west Bronx's six mile main strip and offers many historical and deco-style buildings. Although once a shady area of town, recent renovations in the area now offer art deco planters with blooming flowers and closed streets allowing room for visitors to stroll and cycle. The new Bronx Walk of Fame displays colorful lamppost signs, commemorating natives such as Red Buttons, Colin Powell and Stanley Kubrick.
At the intersection of Grand Concourse and 161st Street, which goes down to the Harlem River and connects the avenue with Yankee Stadium, you will find some of the most fascination buildings and structures, including the Grand Concourse apartment that is decorated with gilded mosaics and a metallic marquee. Also, located in the area is the Bronx Museum of the Arts. This great museum celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and features talents of local artists and the area's cultural landscape. Area residents are trying to get many of the area building s declared as historical landmarks.
