Floyd Bennett Field, not to be mistaken for the Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport, holds the illustrious distinction of being New York City's first municipal airport. Opened in 1931, Floyd Bennett Field is a great sightseeing opportunity, despite being inactive since the early 70's. From being the start and finish point for Howard Hughes' legendary flight around the globe to becoming a base for the U.S. military, there's very little this airstrip hasn't seen. It has even been featured in the cinematic classic
The Godfather.
Today, Floyd Bennett Field annually hosts Gateway to the Nations - New York City Native American Heritage Celebration is occasionally, Amateur Astronomers Association of New York and is occasionally reopened for air shows.
