Central Park, be sure to stop and view the spectacular memorial of the fantastic and unique jazz legend, Duke Ellington. The amazing sculpture of Edward Kenndy Ellington, better known as Duke Ellington, is the first monument in New York City that was dedicated to an African American. Sculpted by Robert Graham, the Memorial was officially unveiled on July 1, 1997. The monument is a 25 foot high bronze tableau along with an eight foot sculpture of Ellington standing over a grand piano. The monument is placed in Duke Ellington Circle. Ellington was known for classics such as
Sophisticated Lady, and
In a Sentimental Mood. He also received the presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969.
