Castle Clinton holds on to one of the more varied histories for New York City buildings with a number of renovations and changes in use that have helped make this interesting piece of New York City a national monument by the National Park Service. Castle Clinton was first built as a fort for the War of 1812. After a long stint of seeing no real action, the area was turned into a dining and entertainment district deemed Castle Garden. In 1840, Castle Garden saw the addition of a roof and was transformed into an opera house. Later the building would be used as an immigrant landing depot and aquarium.
Today Castle Clinton stands tall as a building realized for the many uses and applications it has offered the city of New York throughout its storied history. Come experience the remnants of a historical fort, opera house and aquarium all at once with a visit to Castle Clinton.
