The Brooklyn Bridge Park has become a popular and treasured oasis in the middle of New York City's urban jungle. Few other locations offer such spectacular views of the New York Harbor and downtown Manhattan. The Brooklyn Bridge Park is still called the Main Street Lot because the ground it occupies was once a parking lot. Now managed by the city, it is a place where people go to play ball, have picnics, enjoy a pleasant walk, or just daydream. There are also city sponsored programs and events. People can come to the park for movies, music concerts, art exhibits and educational exhibits.
The Brooklyn Bridge Park has been called a natural classroom. The Park Conservancy is dedicated to highlighting the park's resources. School children and other members of the public come here to learn about the site's natural history and estuarine environment. Through a variety of programs they study marine life, birds, and natural flora of the area. Though most of the original mudflats, marshes, shellfish beds and sandbars that once characterized the banks of the Lower East River have long since disappeared, there are a few spots where nature has reclaimed its territory. One such is the Cove in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The present Brooklyn Bridge Park is just the beginning of the biggest park development project undertaken in Brooklyn since Prospect Park opened more than 130 years ago. Currently under-used and inaccessible land will be transformed until Brooklyn Bridge Park is 1.3 miles long and covers 85 acres. It will be a magnificent public space with lawns, recreation areas, playgrounds for children, coves, beaches and restored natural habitats. In addition there will be fishing piers, floating pathways, canals and restored wetlands. The future looks great for Brooklyn Bridge Park
