Alice Austen House, Staten Island, NY
An extraordinary woman, photographer Alice Austen lived in a quaint victotrian-style cottage with beautiful views of the New York Harbor. In this house-museum, you'll find displays of her work from a negative collection which tell the story of turn-of-the-century American life.
The original house dates back to the 1690s, and went through many changes during its time. The parlor has been restored to the way it would have looked during the 1890s. Alice Austen was born nearby in 1866. This house was bought by her grandfather in 1844. She lived here until 1945.
The house was bought by the city and restored in 1975, and today you can visit to learn about the lady who brought us stories of life as it was known in a time long ago with her unique pictures.
Open to the public: March - December, Thursday - Sunday, Noon - 5pm For more information, call (718) 816-4506
