Explore Marine Ecology aboard schooner Pioneer at South Street Seaport Museum in New York City
The Pioneer is a 102-foot, 35-passenger active schooner ship housed at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City. This downtown Manhattan maritime museum explores NYC's role as a major seaport, from its history as a landing point for immigrants to the last 200 years of transatlantic shipping. In 1998, Congress named the museum as America's National Maritime Museum.
The Pioneer is just one of many ships that is owned by the museum. This ship takes passengers out on the East River several times a day for trips with various themes. One of the ship's more popular trips is the trip that explores the marine biology of NYC waters. Adults and kids are welcome on this trip, which not only provides a seafaring trip around Manhattan, but also provides educational hands-on activities that show that there actually is marine life in urban waters! Hours vary at the museum depending on the season, so please check the museum's web site to verify times to visit. Ship trips many be cancelled due to inclement weather.
