The New York Subway System Information

The New York Subway System is one of the most popular methods of travel in the city, with ridership at over 1.4 billion last year. From Queens to Manhattan and from the Hudson River to the JFK International Airport, you can get close to your destination in New York City by using the many routes on the New York Subway System.

This rapid transit system is one of the most used systems in the world. Of the 468 stations located throughout the city, all but two operate 24 hours a day. The stations are located strategically in the New York City boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Altogether, the subway system boasts over 840 miles of rail throughout the boroughs.

The busiest station in New York City is the Times Square-42nd Street station. The Lexington Avenue-53rd Street station puts you close to the United Nations and Central Park. The Howard Beach-JFK Airport station provides you with easy access to the JFK Airport. The E 180th Street station in the Bronx sits just a short walk from the Bronx Zoo. The Broadway — Lafayette Street station sits just minutes from some of the most famous Broadway theaters.

The easiest way to travel on the New York Subway System is with a MetroCard, which can be purchased from clerks on-site at the many stations throughout the city. The fare for each ride on the subway is deducted when you swipe the card upon entrance to the subway. Balances can be replenished by visiting vending machines located in the stations or with the on-site clerks. The average fare today is $2.25.

With the traffic congestion on the roads, commuting by car and even bus or taxi is often less efficient than taking the subway. Include travel on the New York Subway System in your vacation plans.
