Although Harlem has certainly had its fair share of problems throughout the years, today's Harlem has seen a surge of gentrification and still houses the undeniably powerful past of the Harlem Renaissance. During the early 20th century Harlem became known as an area primarily influenced by African-American culture, culminating in the eventual Harlem Renaissance of the 1920's. As the center of jazz music and the hip, jive culture, the Harlem Renaissance embodied the culture of young blacks while inspiring young whites to take a much looser stance on life than their conservative parents and grandparents. Whether you're looking to relive the glory days of Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and the rest of the landmark musicians that found fame during the Harlem Renaissance or are merely wanting a complete view of New York City, you'll find a number of reasons to pay a visit to Harlem.
