God of Carnage

Written by Yasmina Reza, God of Carnage follows a twisted tale of parent interaction due to an accident between their children. The setup for the play begins with two boys playing on a playground. The name of their game is God of Carnage and an accident occurs in which one boy loses two teeth due to being hit in the mouth with a stick wielded by the second boy. The opening of the play actually involves the meeting of the two boys' parents. As the parents meet to discuss the incident, it becomes apparent that their personal and professional lives will be intertwined in the plot of the production. Alain, the father of one boy, is a lawyer and remains tied to his cellular phone, while his wife Annette is a shoe aficionado in love with wealth. The father of the other boy is a wholesaler who built his own business from the ground up, while the mother is writing a book about suffering in Darfur.

As the evening proceeds, the parents go from speaking to arguing about a wide range of topics. Items discussed include things like homophobia and racial issues, as well as misogyny. The evening continues to deteriorate throughout the 90 minutes of the play. The play has earned great praise from international critics for its dialogue and humor.
