New Orleans' Tulane University is one of the top private research institutions in the country. Tulane University is a private, non-sectarian university with over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Founded in 1834, Tulane has made a distinguished name for itself with premier academic programs in architecture, business, law, liberal arts, medicine, the sciences and engineering, and social work. The school also participates in NCAA Division I-A athletics in football, baseball, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, cross country, and track. Instead of a traditional team name, Tulane is known as the Green Wave, although the school does have a pelican as a mascot.
