Tabasco Pepper Sauce in Avery Island, LA
Tabasco Pepper Sauce in Avery Island, LA is a veritable institution in the state. The factory that produces this mainstay condiment is located on Avery Island, just a short two hour drive from New Orleans. If you plan on visiting the Big Easy, you will want to set aside time for this worthy side trip to this world of spice.
Avery Island itself is quite a gem and the family that owns the Tabasco brand, the Avery/McIlhenny clan has turned quite a bit on the island into a preserve of sorts with fantastic gardens as well as a sanctuary for birds. The botanical gardens have many specimens brought from all over the world and provide exceptional bursts of color pleasing to the eye. The egrets on the island are protected and in fact, there is a rookery on the premises.
In addition to the natural wonders of Avery Island, you never forget there is a bustling enterprise there. The moment you leave your car, you can smell the scent of Tabasco in the air. The factory tour, while short, is very information. You get to learn all about the peppers used in the making of Tabasco as well as the different products produced by the factory. The country store on the premises is exceptional and you will find a whole host of Tabasco products that you likely will not see on every grocery store shelf.
The island is open every day of the week for touring, barring any major holidays. There is a nominal toll of $1 to cross onto the island. If you want to see the factory workers in action, take a tour during the week rather than the weekend.
