Congo Square is a large open space found in the southern most corner of Louis Armstrong Memorial Park in New Orleans, Louisiana. Paved with cobblestones, the area is surrounded by pretty landscaping and stately oak trees that are native to the area. It is quite a picturesque scene. The official name of Congo Square is actually Beauregard Square, although no one ever refers to it as such.
Located within the Treme neighborhood, Congo Square is also across the way from Rampart Street, which is part of the famous
French Quarter of New Orleans. This entire neighborhood is quite musical, with roots in African American style of music from the slave era to now. This open area was once a gathering place for slaves as well as freed black citizens. It served as a market place, meeting place and even a place for music and dancing. It is the music and dancing that greatly shaped the jazz world in New Orleans.
These days, Congo Square is visited by many people, some who are just strollers through Louis Armstrong Memorial Park. However, there are also many music festivals, parades, marches and other outdoor musical events held here. You might also see performers here showing off their musical talents on the drums, guitar or even voice.
If you are a fan of the
French Quarter and New Orleans music, you might want to take a stroll to Congo Square. Some people have claimed to have felt some old historic vibes while others just enjoy the area and its historic ties.
