If you travel downriver from New Orleans, you'll find Chalmette Battlefield, the location of the famous Battle of New Orleans. The Battle of New Orleans occurred on January 8, 1815, and the triumph of the American soldiers over the British was a celebrated date for many years among Americans. Though the battle occurred after the treaty ending the War of 1812 was signed, the victory was seen as a symbol of America's once and for all breaking away from British rule. On this battlefield, visitors will also find the historic Malus-Beauregard House and the Chalmette Cemetery, which is where 15,000 deceased troops from the War of 1812 to the Vietnam War are commemorated.
