The
Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans, LA has had quite a bit of a clean-up the past few years due to Hurricane Katrina but it is great to say that it is totally up and running. If you are even a teeny bit interested in sea life, then you will have a whale of a time here as there are plenty of things to see and do.
Located on Canal Street near the
Audubon Zoo, the
Aquarium of the Americas also houses an awesome IMAX theater. You can get an up close and personal look at many creatures of the deep from various oceans and seas like the Pacific and Atlantic and more. There is a tunnel which allows you to see through it to the sea life beyond. You will see sharks prowling the waters as well as large stingrays and a multitude of fish and other life.
There is the Mississippi Gallery which is very interesting as it houses some majestic sea turtles and unusual white alligators, which are quite rare. The sea otters elsewhere are quite fun and could entertain you for hours if you so choose. The jellyfish are quite surreal and the penguins are just all around awesome. Other things to make note of are the stage shows that are performed hourly as well as a deep sea petting zoo where you get hands-on with some creatures form the sea.
Be aware that the
Aquarium of the Americas is closed on Mondays but there are open hours the rest of the week. You might want to check their website for possible holiday closings if you are visiting in the area around that time. All in all, you get an outstanding education about the fascinating sea life.
