New Orleans Jazz FestivalNew Orleans is the birthplace of Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong, and is considered by many to be the birthplace of all jazz. And while jazz has become one of America's greatest cultural achievements, there is still no better place to hear the real deal than New Orleans. Each April, the New Orleans Jazz Festival brings together musicians, chefs and artisans in a once a year celebration of the music that gave the Crescent City it's own fabulous beat. Each spring, the music starts at the historic Fair Grounds Race Track, where visitors and locals alike gather to enjoy a selection of great Jazz performances. This daytime event will be complemented by a series of evening concerts and educational workshops. Besides music, the fair consists of a variety of crafts, parades, food and great people. The Grandstand enables festival-goers to take an intimate look at the vibrant culture, cuisine, and art of Louisiana. Each of the three floors of this state-of-the-art building contains a variety of exhibits to titillate the senses. New Orleans Jazz Festival Louisiana Folklife Village The Louisiana Folklife Village contains a variety of artisans and tradition-bearers creating a vast cultural experience. You will find many different items from Indians sewing dazzling beaded attire to boat builders meticulously creating skiffs that sail our waterways. Cajun fishermen weave hoop and cast nets. In the Louisiana Marketplace, talented artists display and sell hand-colored photographs, pine needle baskets, whimsical jewelry and other creations that show a vast cultural history. Congo Square contains music, art and performances from a vast assortment of cultures. Heritage Square contains a vast network of tents, each containing musicians playing a variety of gospel, contemporary jazz and blues. You will also find a showcase of wonderful handcrafted clothing, leather goods, musical instruments, paintings, photographs, sculptures and irresistible jewelry. There are also demonstrations on glass blowing, toy making, knitting, weaving and pottery turning. New Orleans Jazz Festival Food This festival contains an array of food dishes that are classics cuisines from Louisiana, such as shrimp, crawfish, catfish, gumbos and other entrees that are influenced by local customs and flavors. In addition, you will find a variety of foods from all over the world. Whatever your tastes, you are assured of finding something to entice your taste buds.
