Sculpture by George Rickey at Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, TN

During the first half of 2008, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, Tennessee used their outdoor South Lawn to display a stunning sculpture by renowned artist George Rickey (1907-2002). The stainless steel sculpture, Two Lines Oblique Gyratory II, was created in 1999, when Rickey was 92 years old. The sculpture, which is 28 feet tall, contains a central stem from which linear metal arms extend - the result resembles a sparse wintertime tree or a broadcast antenna.

Rickey is well-known in the art world for his work with motion and kinetics. In the 1950s he started to build sculptures that played with weights, balances, wind, and gravity. His attention to math, design, and the laws of physics culminated in works that brought together the beauty of sculpture with the experimental nature of science. Though this sculpture is no longer being shown, the Frist Center often uses its lawn to exhibit impressive large-scale works of contemporary art.
