Ricky Van Shelton has been quoted as saying that he dreamed of playing at the Grand Ole Opry, but never even dreamed of becoming a member. Well, his dreams came true, and in a big way. Ricky went from performing odd jobs to becoming a country sensation. While growing up Shelton excelled in music and art, but he didn't know how to make that a career.

Background and Early Career

  • Ricky Van Shelton banked on his artistic abilities from an early age. While he was still in elementary school he sold oil paintings to earn money.
  • Ricky moved to Nashville in 1984 with his wife-to-be. He soon signed with CBS Records, when a newspaper columnist recommended him.

Grand Ole Opry Induction

  • On June 10, 1988 Ray Acuff and Jack Greene introduced Ricky Van Shelton as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Ricky then sang his hit "Somebody Lied." He received a standing ovation and was asked to perform an encore.

  • Ricky now enjoys spending most of his time at home pursuing other hobbies, but singing is still a large part of his life. Every now and then he will travel to Nashville and perform once again on the Opry stage. To see if he will be performing soon, look at the VME Grand Ole Opry Blog!
