Grand Ole Opry Member Spotlight: Marty StuartWith a sound as unique as his personal style, Marty Stuart's contributions to rockabilly, bluegrass, and country music are immeasurable. Known for wearing flashy rhinestone suits and doling out a honky-tonk, rockabilly-infused sound, it's difficult to confuse any Marty Stuart song for another artist's work. Background and Early Career Marty Stuart was born September 30, 1958 in Philadelphia, Mississippi. Marty received his first guitar at the age of 2, and his first mandolin at the age of 12. He began playing in family bluegrass bands before he was a teenager, and made his first Grand Ole Opry appearance in 1972, playing mandolin with musical great Lester Flatt. After Flatt's death in 1979, Marty join Johnny Cash's band. Marty worked with Cash until 1985, when he released his self-titled debut album. That release would spark a recording career than has earned the Mississippi native coveted industry awards, including a Grammy Award and CMA Award. Although Marty has collaborated with a wide variety of performers over the years, he maintains a style that is all his own as he blends the bluegrass music on which he was raised with the cutting-edge "hillbilly rock" that he has helped create. Our tour guide was wonderful and she really knew her stuff. The lady who runs the office was also very nice, allowing us to join the earlier walking tour. I learned so much about Nashville the city and people.
