Kathy Mattea At Grand Ole Opry

Kathy Mattea is a country and bluegrass singer whose music is infused with folk and Celtic elements. She grew up in Cross Lanes, West Virginia and discovered her love of music at Girl Scout camp. After moving to Nashville, Mattea worked as a tour guide at the Country Music Hall of Fame, sang backup vocals, and recorded demos for songwriters before she was signed to a record label. Mattea has recorded 17 albums and has 30 charting singles to her name. Her No. 1 hits include “Goin' Gone,” “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses,” “Come from the Heart,” and “Burnin' Old Memories.” Her music ranges from country-pop to stripped-down mountain music. Mattea's introspective, socailly-conscious lyrics show off her folk music influences.

Mattea has won two Grammy Awards, Best Southern/Country/Bluegrass Gospel album for her Christmas record Good News and Best Female Country Vocal Performer. She's also a three-time Female Vocalist of the Year winner from the CMA and ACM awards. Kathy Mattea is a member of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. She's also heavily involved in charity work and activism. Mattea is a vocal opponent of mountaintop removal coal mining. Her work with HIV/AIDS related charity organizations earned her the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award.
