Grand Ole Opry guest artist Jason Michael Carroll may not look how he sounds, but he has definitely made an impression on the country music community. Raised in Youngsville, North Carolina, Carroll was born in Houston in 1978 to a conservative Christian minister and was forced to overcome his father’s views on modern music as sinful. In 2004, he won a local singing competition, the WRAZ FOX 50’s Gimme the Mic contest.
Around the time he won the music competition, he finished writing his single “Alyssa Lies.” He was discovered by Rusty Harmon, the former manager of Hootie & the Blowfish. By 2005, he was a regular along Music Row in Nashville and later signed with Arista Nashville. He has since released three albums, starting with Waitin’ in the Country. The album debuted at the Number One spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums charts. The emotional song “Alyssa Lies” was the debut single off this album, reaching the Number Five spot on the Hot Country Songs charts. “Livin’ Our Love Song” and “I Can Sleep When I’m Dead” followed at the Numbers Six and Twenty-One spots, respectively. On his second album, Growing Up Is Getting Old, “Where I’m From” charted at Number Eleven. He has also released the singles “Hurry Home” and “Numbers.”
Carroll is a straight-up, no-frills country artist who was raised without the sounds of rock, pop or country to influence him. His upbringing, however, could not stop him from finding his place and his passion in the country music community.
