Gaither Vocal Band At Grand Ole Opry

Founded in the early 1980s, the Gaither Vocal Band was started by Bill Gaither and Gary McSpadden, both previously of the Bill Gaither Trio, as well as Steve Green and Lee Young, two of the trio’s backup singers. The band was formed in a spontaneous manner, backstage during a Gaither Trio concert. That night, the quartet sang “Your First Day in Heaven.” Their debut, self-titled album was released in 1981. They originally called themselves the New Gaither Vocal Band.

Throughout the next several years, the band faced many changes in their lineup and released several albums under contemporary styles. In 1991, Southern Gospel fans welcomed the band with open arms after their project Homecoming. Their song “I Bowed on My Knees” was a hit in 1993 off of the album Southern Classics. The Gaither Vocal Band has two Number One hits on the Singing News chart: “Yes I Know” and “I Will Go On.” The group has also performed classic Southern Gospel songs, like “He Touched Me,” “I Believed in a Hill Called Mount Calvary” and “Sinner Saved by Grace.”
The band has won many awards throughout their career: two Grammys for Best Southern Gospel, Country Gospel or Bluegrass Gospel for Homecoming and Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel for Lovin’ Life. They have also won several Southern Gospel Album of the Year Dove Awards and Southern Gospel Song of the Year Dove Awards.
In 2008, the band recorded a reunion DVD at Gaither Studios. With the exception of three members, every past and present member appeared and performed. The two CDs that they released debuted at the top two positions on Billboard’s Contemporary Christian Album chart.
