American Idol finalist Danny Gokey was born in April of 1980 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began singing with his family at his church, and, later became the worship director for several years. In his country/country-pop music, he mixes in some blue-eyed soul sounds and has stated that his faith is “the key to who I am.” In 2008, he auditioned for the eighth season of American Idol and made it to the Top 3. After the show, he toured with his fellow idols and began working on his foundation, Sophia’s Heart, to help disadvantaged children. In 2009, he signed with 19 Recordings/RCA Nashville.
In late 2009, he released his debut single, “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me,” which peaked at Number Twenty-Four. His album, My Best Days, was released in March of 2010 and debuted at Number Four on the Billboard charts, making Gokey the best opening-week sales by a debut country male in the last eighteen years. His next two singles, “I Will Not Say Goodbye” and “Second Hand Heart,” both reached the Top 50 as well.
In 2009, Gokey was nominated for two awards: the Wisconsin Area Music Industry’s (WAMI) Best Christian/Gospel Artist of the Year and the Teen Choice Awards’ Choice Summer Tour, with the rest of his American Idol Top 10.
