Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is easily the heart of the shag dance world and with the 2007 National Shag Dance Championships over, there is still a lot of excitement in the air.

On March 8th, 9th, and 10th of this year the finals were held and professional dance team Sam West and Jessica Mcalhany took home not only first place in their division, but were the overall winners with their fancy footwork.

Shag?
Shag dancing is a form of swing dancing that is immensely popular in its native state, South Carolina. Purists will recognize this type of dancing as Carolina Shag, which is a direct evolution of the big band jazz, jitterbug, and jump blues eras. Beach music is generally played to it, so fans of Good Vibrations! at the Carolina Opry may want to take a closer look.

Competitions
Although the biggest competition of the year is over, there are still plenty of officially sanctioned shag dates throughout the year. These are only competitions within Myrtle Beach that a traveler might want to attend, nearby hotels are the Ocean Forest Plaza Beachfront, Sands Ocean Club Resort Beachfront, and the Sleep Inn at Harbour View

April 20-29: SOS Spring Safari
July 6-7:  Fat Harold's 4th of July
August 24-25: Fat Harold's Labor Day

Throughout the year, Myrtle Beach is known for having special dates set aside for shag, here's a brief overview. Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede
They served dinner with no utensils. My hubby had a small tizzy. They should at least ask if you want to eat with your fingers. He also has false teeth and likes to take his corn off of the cob. So that was that. I found it a bit messy, but ate the food, which was fairly good. I know they are in a hurry to get everyone fed, but even plastic wear would have been nice. The show was ok, but I expected more. Next time we will go to see Legends.

The Vacation to Myrtle Beach was fabulous and the seats we purchased through Vacations Made Easy were excellent. I forgot to bring the confirmation of the tickets we purchased to Good Vibrations at the Carolina Opry and my sales representative was nice enough to call and fax over our confirmation to the Opry so their weren't any problems. Thanks again and I will definitly use you again in the future!!!! Neil & Faith Kaplan
