Produced by prehistoric and historic peoples over thousands of years, rock art is one of the most mysterious attractions at the recreation areas near Moab. The samples found at the Kane Creek Art Site are dated from as early as 500a.d. and include both petroglyphs scratched onto the rock surfaces, and pictographs painted with mineral pigments and plant dyes. Visitors should drive to Moon Flower Canyon where they'll find a pictograph depicting bighorn sheep, snakes, human forms, and a trail.
Twelve feet high and one hundred feet across, the panel dates from the Archaic period and is one of the most impressive in the park. Another well-known petroglyph from the Ute period covers all four sides of a large boulder with various animal forms and serpents, with the famous "Birthing Scene" dominating an entire side. The sites are located all along a drive close to Moab, so visitors should check in at the Moab Information Center for directions.
