Part of Canyonlands National Park, the Island in the Sky district is an accessible destination for travelers with young children or those who have only a short time to spend in the area. The Visitor Center provides exhibits, publications, information, and an orientation video about the park. A short drive from the center, Island in the Sky sits atop a 1500-foot mesa and offers a 34-mile scenic drive on paved roads and lofty viewpoints from which visitors can see one hundred miles in every direction.
Although there are plenty of backcountry hiking trails and four-wheel-drive roads, Island in the Sky also offers family-friendly activities, such as the aptly named Grand View Point Trail or the short hike to Whale Rock, where kids can climb the whale. A relaxing sunset walk to Mesa Arch offers breathtaking views of the canyons below. The Willow Flat Campground provides twelve sites with picnic tables and fire grates, and is open year round.
