A mesa resting on sheer sandstone cliffs over one thousand feet above its surroundings, the Island in the Sky offers tons of spectacular vistas of the landscape at Canyonlands National Park. The easiest district to reach and explore, the Island is the perfect choice for families with young children or travelers on a schedule. A paved scenic drive provides many pullouts and overlooks, and leads to Grand View Point where visitors are treated to a panoramic view of the entire park.
There are also many short hiking and nature trails leading to Mesa Arch, Whale Rock, and Aztec Butte, all suitable for kids. For visitors with more time to spare, the park offers longer hiking trails on the Syncline and Murphy loops, as well as four-wheel-drive and biking adventures on the hundred-mile White Rim Road in the backcountry. The Willow Flat Campground is open year-round and provides tables and fire grills. An excellent visitor center provides exhibits and information about the district.
