With over a million acres of golden cliffs, lush hanging gardens, and narrow canyons, the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area provides travelers with some refreshing options for relaxation and escape. The brilliant blue of Lake Powell offers a delightful contrast to the desert landscape, as well as the opportunity for boating, the most popular activity in the park.
The four marinas provide a place to rent boats or to launch a private vessel for a tranquil tour of the lake. Adventurous types may prefer to kayak on the Colorado River or drive the backcountry Burr Trail for stunning views of the Henry Mountains and the colorful Waterpocket Fold, Circle Cliffs, and Long Canyon. Many hiking trails are also available, or visitors may choose to take a pleasant side trip to the Wahweap and Lone Rock areas. The Glen Canyon Natural History Association provides free tours of the Glen Canyon Dam.
