The Canyonlands area has been used as a spectacular backdrop for movie makers ever since the legendary director John Ford recognized its unusual beauty in the 1940s and filmed the first of many movies there. Many early films, such as Rio Grande, Son of Chochise, Cheyenne Autumn, and Commancheros, were set right on the Red Cliffs Ranch where filmmakers could take advantage of the stunning natural scenery. The Film Museum takes visitors back in time with a look at the black-and-white Hollywood heyday, as well as at some of America's most-loved actors who worked on location at the ranch, like John Wayne, Henry Ford, and Jimmy Stewart.
The exhibition also includes highlights from modern films like Thelma & Louise and City Slickers, as well as an ever-changing collection of film memorabilia past and present. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the ranch and museum, which is free of charge.
