Shepard's Way Dairy Farm in Northfield, MN is one of the largest farms raising sheep today in North America. They have a huge farm with hundreds of sheep and lamb. They do more than just raise sheep, however. Shepherd's Way Farms make all their sheep cheeses themselves. Using the milk they get from their sheep, they produce the cheese by hand.
The Shepherd's, along with their four boys live and work on the farm, producing many kinds of delicious cheeses to be delivered all over the United States. They make Queso Fresco de Oveja, Friesago and Big Woods Blue to name a few of their unique brands. Harman and Ricotta or made and offered on a limited basis. You can find most of their cheeses in co-ops (Lund's or Bylerly's) and natural food stores in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. They also send their cheeses to many restaurants and select stores in Washington, D.C, Chicago, Iowa, California and Boston.
Shepherd's Way Farms has just been the hero in the rescue of the Big Woods State Park Dairy Barn, which is now in the process of being moved to Shepherd's Farm. If not for the move, the barn would have been demolished. This 1930s dairy barn is 120 feet and will become the home for rover 200 lambs. This will be another fine addition, which will help Shepherd's Way Farms keep their production up as it has been.
Viewers will be able to see this new addition when they come to tour the farm. Other interesting buildings they can see are the 1900s two-story grainery, the cheese aging room, cheese production room and the sheep-milking parlor. These, at one time, where an old 1940s barn, which Shepherd's managed to restore to make these individual rooms.
