Orphanage Museum in Owatonna
When it comes to the city of Owatonna, Minnesota; there are many things that it is known for. One of the most important things that it has done was having an orphanage for the children that didn't have anywhere else to go (which was the only state orphanage). Because of the orphanage being shut closed, it is now considered to be the State School Orphanage Museum; which is great for showing the history of everything.
At the State School Orphanage Museum, not only will you be able to learn of the history at the orphanage, but you will also be able to see many of the old photographs, artifacts, and also hear many of the personal stories from children that grew up in the orphanage. The dates that the orphanage was open from were from 1886 to 1945; and between those years close to 20,000 children had come and gone to the orphanage.
When going on a tour of the museum, it is a self-guided tour where you can go through the museum as well as the grounds (which is free of charge). When on the grounds, you will be able to see all 13 of the original buildings, the cemetery (where close to 200 children rest) and also the "State School Kids" memorial. If you choose, you may also take a guided tour with Harvey Ronglien (who was on orphan himself for 11 years); however, it will cost $4 per person and by appointments only.
Today, the State School Orphanage Museum is considered to be and listed on the National Register of Historic Places; because it is such an old building and contains many great and interesting artifacts.
