Musical Instrument Museum in Minneapolis, MN is also known as the Schubert Club. It was established in 1882 and has a collection of musical instruments that date back more than 400 years. The museum also has exhibits that have musical manuscripts and instruments from around the world.
Admission is free and there are guided tours done by a docent available for all visitors.
The museum is open Monday to Friday from 11 am to 3 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. The Musical Instrument Museum also has an office. The office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. After tour hours are possible and need to be arranged in advance. It's also suggested that groups of five or more call in advance.
The organization that runs the museum, the Schubert Club, supports education. There are three types of scholarships students can apply for. Grants are also available for serious students with a talent and in need of financial assistance.
The Schubert Club runs a program called Project CHEER. This program offers free music lessons at the Martin Luther King Center in St. Paul. Lessons in piano and guitar are offered. Families pay a $5 registration fee. This program is offered year round.
An assortment of Masters classes is also offered. The Schubert Club co-sponsors these classes with area colleges and universities. There's a composer mentor program where high school age composers get to work closely with composer-in-residence, Edie Hill.
The main floor of the Musical Instrument Museum is home to a dozen or so keyboard instruments like a 1768 square piano. The second floor galleries are referred to as the Landmark Center.
