In addition to being the location of popular concerts, the Lake Harriet Bandshell attracts attention itself, primarily because lake visitors find its design so intriguing. Variously described as "cute" and "charming" the bandshell is home to afternoon and evening musical entertainment.
Among the musical styles presented at this venue: local pop and folk musicians; Kenwood Chamber Orchestra; Minneapolis Pops Orchestra and many more. Perhaps the most amazing fact about this small but significant structure is that summer concerts have been presented here since 1888 (though the current bandshell is, according to city records, the fifth structure on the site). The bandshell's turrets and roof design are meant to recall styles popular more than 100 years ago.
Lake Harriet, one of the bodies of water in a Chain of Lakes, includes 344 acres of water surface and nearly 70 acres of surrounding land. The site is used constantly by biking enthusiasts, walkers and nature lovers. Lake amenities include refreshments at the concession area. Trails can be used for riding, for skating, walking and jogging. The lake itself is a popular spot for water activities. Various water craft are available for rent.
In addition to the picturesque, the lake features a beach, boat dock, garden, picnic area, tennis court, playground and restroom facilities. More information about Lake Harriet bandshell (or for reservations) is available at (612) 313-7796.
