Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, MN is a popular place for all sorts of outdoor sports like fishing, surfing, sailing, canoeing, walking, jogging, biking, swimming and in-line skating.The lake was once known as Lake Medoza or Lake of the Loons. It was renamed in honor of US Senator, Vice President and Secretary of War under President Monroe, John Caldwell Calhoun. John Caldwell Calhoun was also instrumental in the establishment of Fort Snelling.
The park has 3.2 miles for bikes and skaters. There are three picnics and 3.1 miles of walkers and runners. For the beaches, there are watercraft rentals available. Watercraft rentals can be made through Wheel Fun Rentals. There are gondola services as well.
Lake Calhoun is part of the Chain Lakes, which is the second most popular visitor destination after the Mall of America. In 1999 the Chain of Lakes had over five million visitors.
Lake Calhoun has a Tinfish Restaurant located at the Calhoun Pavilion.
Acquisition for the land and the park began around 1886. The whole process continued until 1909. The 89 acres of land and the 422 acres of water were bought for $127,414. In 1998 a wetland project began to improve and protect the quality of water.
Amenities of Lake Calhoun include archery, beach, a biking path, boat dock, drinking fountain, fishing dock, parkway for cars, picnic area, refectory/concessions, restroom facilities and a soccer field. There's also a softball field, a volleyball court, a walking path, and wells.
Lake Calhoun is located at 3000 Calhoun Parkway. It's open from 6 am to 10 pm.
