The American Wings Air Museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is often referred to simply as AWAM. This museum is much more than a simple museum as the location functions as a working restoration facility for various aircraft pieces. Many of the pieces found here are donations from The Mohawk Association which have been given over many years. Much of the museum is comprised of these historic elements, all of which are lovingly cared for and restored to pristine condition whenever possible.
Many of the pieces found here are donations from individuals and from Army Units. The photos accompanying many of the pieces are in fact memory filled and whenever possible tell stories about the service of the aircraft, those that donated the memorabilia or other facts. Visitors will see actual Mohawks up close, military apparel and flags, pilot gear, and models dating back many years. You can look at the exterior of all aircraft as well as the cockpits and instrument panels of many others. Many of these are historic American warbirds in excellent condition.
The AWAM does charge a small admission which is used to keep the condition and care of these artifacts. Visitors are encouraged to bring groups, but calling ahead is important. Open times vary based on season and day. Guests can also book group guided tours for an in depth experience. This too should be booked in advance. There is also the American Wings Air Museum Gift Shop where you will find books, videos, fun flight apparel and aircraft parts to enjoy and take home with you.
