The Opa Locka Community is located in Miami Florida, in Miami Dad County. It is near to the Miami Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan area. This very small community is just a few miles in size (just 4.2 square miles), making it one of the smallest in the area. The community is named as such due to the type of location it is on. The name, Opa Locka means big swamp in Seminole. The city has under 14,000 people in it.
Although small, the community provides a number of resources and a quaint lifestyle. There are 9 cemeteries located within as well as six colleges. What makes the city unique is the fact that it is based on the Arabian nights theme. Developer Glenn Curtiss developed the city with street names such as Ali Baba Avenue and Sesame Street. In addition, the city is also home to the largest number of Moorish Architecture in the Western Hemisphere.
Amelia Earhart is known to have launched her trip around the world from the airport near to Opa Locka. It is also the city that is used in the documentary film Salesman.
