Miami Museum of Science in Miami, Florida is a museum that strives to "inspire people of all ages and cultures to enjoy science and technology, in order to better understand ourselves and our world." This is the museum's mission statement.
The museum was established in 1950 as the Junior Museum of Miami. At that time it was a private non-profit organization in a house at the corner of Biscayne Boulevard and 26th Street. It was started by the Junior League of Miami's Project Finding Committee as a science museum for Dade County children.
In 1952 the museum had grown so much that it was forced to move to a new location. This was also the year that the name changed to Museum of Science and Natural History. This organization is responsible for finding volunteers for the staff, for operating the museum store, and creating and running tours and outreach programs.
In 1960 the museum moved into a facility located on three acres of the Vizcaya complex. This is the museum's current location and in 1989 the lease had been extended for 99 years. In 1960 the museum's fundraising branch was established. In 1966 the Space Transit Planetarium was constructed.
