A beautiful newly-renovated Ex-Federal Post Office, the Museum of the City of Merida in Mexico houses a cultural heritage that shows exactly what the historical development of the city was about in its early times.
Considered one of the most important buildings of the town, it was inaugurated in the year 1908 by the city's governor at that time, Enrique Munoz Aristequi, a uniquely special building with French tendencies and architectural characteristics which has always caused it to be historically valuable.
It was easy to see the economical well-building of the time which was considered the "era of the green gold", also referred to as henequen fiber. When was redone, it housed the City of Merida Museum with many historical demonstrations, such as the Pre-Hispanic Merida, where pieces showing the area's Mayan culture from the pre-Hispanic city of Th'o. Another favorite is the Colony or New-Hispanic Merida, with pieces related to the Spanish conquest of Merida and its founding. Other sections are the 19th and early 20th century Merida, in addition to the 20th Century Merida where modern pieces and objects are demonstrated.
A real favorite is the Municipal Merida Art Gallery which is located within the Museum in order to promote and commercialize the city's art community. Local artists, both foreign and Meridans, show their work to tourists and locals. Also in the Museum, guided tours are available with reservations and a 10-person minimum to a 30-person maximum, from Tuesday to Friday from 9 am to 6:30 pm with tours lasting about 1.5 hours long. Reservations are to be made three weeks in advance.
