It's really great when you can find a place to enjoy a good movie, learn a little Mexican history, and see really splendid surroundings. You can find all of that and more at the Teatro Merida. This movie house was originally constructed in 1949 and could seat up to 2300 people. It was used for showing both Mexican made and international films and movies. No expensive was spared in the construction and movie goers locally and from abroad were delighted by the opulent wall mountings and silk wallpaper applications. One thing was for sure, most movie theaters don't look anything like this. Things were going very well for the Teatro Merida until the 1970's when the movie industry hit its crisis and the owners of the teatro couldn't fill the seats. Fortunately a solution was found in the 1990's and the Teatro Merida is modified, but back in business for good.
Instead of having one enormous seating area that can only show one local or foreign film, the luxurious Teatro Merida has been remodeling into 3 distinct rooms. You can indulge in your choice of film in the Main Hall, which can accommodate 1200 movie goers at once. If you prefer a less crowded hall, than the Cinetra Manuel Ponce Barbachano is the room for you with seating for 227. Smaller still is the Sala de Arte with room for only 101. Anyway you look at it; it's a wonderful thing that this piece of cinematic history is once open to the public.
