Teatro Héctor Herrera in Merida, MX is a dinner theatre located in Merida Centro. Its founder, Hector Leobardo Alvarez Herrera, better known as his comic character 'Cholo', has been an important proponent of the arts, and particularly satirical theatre, in his native state of Yucatan for many years. He is a well known and popular figure in Merida and, in fact, ran for governor of Yucatan as a member of the Democratic Revolution Party, receiving a small portion of the votes.
After retiring his beloved Cholo character in March of 2008, Herrera has once again made plans to return to the stage under the direction of his wife, Jasmine Lopez, in his latest play, "And what happened to the dream of flamboyances?" He has written over 100 plays in his lifetime; some of the more well known include: Cradle of dogs, Looking at your wife, I see video Cholo, Nada fortnightly The Pejemadrazo, Miguel Amando, and The Train Bola. Herrera has also dabbled in writing for film and television shows. However, it is onstage in the theatre where he feels most alive.
But what Don Herrera does best is satire and he has characterized politicians, artists, businessmen and other people on stage at the Merida Theatre. If you have the opportunity to catch a play at the Teatro Héctor Herrera during your stay in Merida, do not pass it up. Herrera's performances generally sell out so plan on acting fast to get your tickets and then enjoy the show.
