The Monumento a la Patria is known by some as the Monumento a la Bandera. It is the masterpiece of the famous sculptor, Romulo Rozo. The monument is designed to represent the entirety of Mexican history from the prehistoric right up to the present day.
The monument can be found at the far end of the famous Paseo de Montejo boulevard. So what will you see when you get there? The amazingly beautiful creation features a semicircular wall which has a Mexican statue as a centrepiece. The main statue is completely covered in intricate carvings that must have taken so long to create; this really is an impressive work of art.
The city of Merida is the largest in the Mexican State of Yucutan and is home to 600,000 people, so the monument really is in the right place, as this show of the Mexican's proud heritage is in their financial and cultural home. As the site is only 35 kilometres from the popular Gulf of Mexico, it is a mecca for tourism as it is home to some of the most fabulous beaches in the world.
The famous avenue that the sculpture is situated on is worth a visit in itself, being the centre for museums, restaurants and varied arts. There is a new sculpture placed on the avenue each year and they remain there for ten months before being replaced. For those people that have visited the site, it is a memory that remains with them forever, as the monument means so much to the City and the people.
