It was established in the mid twentieth century when Mexico was emerging from depending strictly on an agricultural economy to developing an industrial base. The Mexican government realized that if Mexico was to be able to keep pace with foreign competition, it would be necessary for the Mexican educational system to establish institutions in which young Mexicans could gain the technological knowledge and skills they would need to compete and succeed.
