Merida is the largest city in the Yucatan state of Mexico. Its inland location and unique culture provide the city with a wealth of attractions and things to do, along with its own traditions, language, and culinary delights. Along with "The White City's" growing reputation as a cultural center and vacation resort, Merida has also attracted some major sports teams and events, including Olympic athletes.
One of the most popular places to see an exciting sporting event is at the Gimnasio Polifuncional in Merida, MX. The gymnasium is home to the professional basketball team, Mayas de Yucatan. This team represents the Yucatan state in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional de Mexico.
This new and modern facility was created by the Duarte Aznar Architects company and is graced by a set of front steps which resemble the famed Mayan pyramids. Gimnasio Polifuncional also hosts various special sports events throughout the year. The city's growing international population is demanding more celebrations and occasions which commemorate a variety of cultures and sports is no exception. Recently, Merida hosted the Harlem Globetrotters and the Miami Heat, both from the United States, at the gymnasium.
Gimnasio Polifuncional is located on Calle 60 in Merida, just north of the Hyatt Hotel and across from the Salvador Alvarado sports field. Times of operation will vary depending on what sports events are planned. Be sure to look at your local newspaper or call the gym directly to find out what is occurring during your stay in Merida.
