The Escuela Superior de Artes de Yucatán in Merida, MX, or College of the Arts of Yucatan, was created in recent years as a public agency of the state government. Its aim was to "To train professionals creators, performers, critics, researchers, teachers, specialized cultural promoters and managers" and to provide a higher education in the disciplines of performing arts, visual arts, literature, and music. As well, the state developed the school with the hopes of designing cultural outreach programs in these disciplines which would be aimed at the artistic community as well as the general public. Another goal of the Escuela Superior de Artes is to provide advisement to public and private agencies on arts and culture and conduct research in these areas.
Merida seemed to recognize a need to provide a venue not only for education in the arts, but as a way to draw in the community by providing cultural events. It is also charged with developing arts exchange programs with other countries. In fact, the school was chosen as the location for the 2009 U.S. Poets in Mexico annual event which draws the most esteemed faculty from America to share their art form with Mexican writers. Throughout the year the university also hosts some important artists and their exhibits in all media.
The school is located at Calle 86 Ave Itzáes No. 501-C, 59 and 65 streets. It awards degrees in Bachelor of Visual Arts, Bachelor of Musical Arts, and Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. Call the school during your stay to determine if any special events are planned.
