VACATIONS MADE EASY : DESTINATIONS : MERIDA, MEXICO : EVENT CALENDAR
Christmas in Merida, YC
Merida, the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan and the largest city on the Yucatan Peninsula, is a wonderful Christmas destination for both shopping and holiday traditions. Though Mexico does not have snowy weather, it does have Los Posadas ??? nine days of celebration that start on December 16th. During these days, especially in a lively city like Merida, you will see candlelight processions and reenactments of nativity scenes by locals. The nativity scene is to Mexico what the Christmas tree is to Christian America. The street performances you will see are usually followed up with parties in local restaurants and bars that last into the wee hours. Going to midnight mass on Christmas Eve is a tradition that is popular in Merida. Also at Christmas, local merchants ramp up production of locally-made products like hammocks, leather goods, and handmade clothing. Because Merida is the capital of the Yucatan, it is the premier shopping destination in the area and a great place to buy either local Mexican or high-end imported items for friends and family.
