The Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo has one of the largest buffalo herds east of the Mississippi river. The herd is the pride of businessman Dan Franklin who helped set up one of Tupelo's most interesting places. The first animals coming into the zoo were from Canada, but now the Zoo features animals from all around the world. The list of animals includes kangaroos, tigers, lions, bears, giraffes and various other animals apart from the buffalo for which the park is named. Birds and various reptiles can also be found.
The Park has various attractions and facilities for the whole family. One of the major attractions is an extremely rare white buffalo named Tukota. Archaeological dig sites at an Indian village named Etoukouma are open to visitors. Visitors to the zoo are taken around in 'Monster Bison Buses'. Other attractions include a Live Merry Go Round with ponies, Horseback riding through the park, a petting zoo and the chance to feed the animals. A snack bar, souvenir shop and a playground with authentic teepees help round off a fun filled day. The park has a special camping area for families and also features an annual rodeo in the month of August. A large pavilion is available for tour groups and special events.
The park is open Monday through Thursday 9am to 4pm, Friday through Saturday 9am to 5pm and on Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Trail rides will be open on Saturdays, weather permitting.
