Stroll the grounds of Historic Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, which was established in 1852 and has grown to become the beautiful resting place for more than 70,000. Among those buried at Elmwood are 18 Confederate Army generals, two Union Army generals, veterans from every American war from the Revolutionary War on, victims of the Sultana steamboat tragedy that claimed more lives than the sinking of the Titanic, and many others.
Guided and self-guided tours are available. Visitors can simply walk or drive through the cemetery, purchase self-guided walking maps, rent or purchase an audio tape or CD, or tour the with the expert docent-led history tour. (Guided tours are typically scheduled once a month on a Saturday.)
