The Morgan Woods and Franklin Park at Germantown, which is fondly referred to as the Germantown Festival Ground, is home to one of the most vibrant and colorful festive extravaganzas in all of Tennessee. The Germantown Festival is hosted in this park on the weekend following Labor Day and draws visitors from all over the country.
This festival began as a community get-together in 1971 and has acquired legendary fame with more than 400 arts and crafts booths offering attractions to entice visitors of all ages. The park is adorned with festive regalia during this eventful weekend and houses a petting zoo for young, inquisitive minds, a duck pond where webby feet quack amusedly at the hoards of curious eyes which peer at them and even pony rides. The festival is accompanied by the lively tunes of the Navy Band and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra Quintet. You can also have your weenie dog, or Dachshund, for the less imaginative, run a race for $35, and win himself the prestigious "Running of the Weenie title". And if your pooch is more of the dressy kinds, feature him in the "Best Dressed Hot Dog" contest and let him enjoy his moment in the spotlight!
And to satiate those hunger pangs as you partake of the festive spirit, gorge on pizza, barbecued delicacies or even Greek food as you choose from the 18 elaborate booths. The Germantown Festival also hosts an auto display where you can marvel at a few vintage beauties. Admission to the Germantown Festival is free and you can even hop on to a shuttle which leaves from the City Hall for no cost whatsoever!
The Festival is conducted from 9:30 am to 6 pm on Saturday and noon to 6 pm on Sunday. For further information, you can contact the Germantown Festival Office at 901-757-9212.
